How to Change Your Life & Make it Stick!

How to change your life | How to stay motivated | And make the changes in your life make it stick

Introduction

If you could change any part of your life, what would it be?

Some of you may want to become more organized, spend less time on social media, others may want to stop bitting their nails; however, one example we are going to look at in this module is how to create lasting change by looking at losing weight.

There are 4 stages that a person goes through until they are finally ready to change; however, there is a mental framework that has been used by some of the most accomplished people throughout the years to shortcut their way to lasting change.

Step #1 – Compelled By Authority

Someone says to you, do this or else…

In the case of losing weight, over the past few years, some people in society want us to accept being overweight, by using such terms as “fatfobia,” being healthy at any size.

No, you cannot be healthy at any size.

You don’t see anyone this size in their 50’s because if they are this size, they are most likely deceased by the time they are in their 50s.

Step #2 – Escape Criticism

You change long enough just to get someone to stop talking about you.

My friend’s ex-wife was quite overweight and lazy. He and her therapist were always encouraging her to clean the house and help take care of their children. She would become responsible about once every year and a half for about 3 weeks, and then would slip back into her same old ways. She would say, “I like myself,” which shows that she was only thinking of herself, and this was her excuse for not changing.

Step #3 – You Know You Should Change But…

unless you are willing to change, you will not change. No one can make you change.

Napoleon Hill, in his classic writing, Laws of Success, pointed out that desire is the starting point of all achievement; however, through each one of these steps, your brain is developing into the person you need to become to create this change.  Guitar.com recently wrote an article, “For every 10 people who start playing guitar, a year later, one person is playing.”, The health industry reports that for people that join a gym, that after paying the fees, the average person will stop going to the gym in the first 22 days and just 10% will last past day 90.

It takes a lot of mental effort to stop doing something we shouldn’t be doing and to start doing something we should be doing.

Use Pain A Fuel To Be Successful

At age 11, Kobe Bryant played so poorly that he didn’t even score a single point in his first season. You might say, but he was only 11. He played in a prominent kids’ league in Philadelphia, where legends like Wilt Chamberlain, as well as his father and uncles, played for the NBA.

Growing up in a family of NBA players, people would naturally expect a lot from you, even at the age of 11. Others would assume you’d be the top choice. However, if you didn’t meet those expectations and disappointed everyone with your performance, like Kobe did, it could be quite embarrassing for you.

He used the pain of embarrassment as fuel to be successful. Kobe started by focusing on the basics, honing his shooting, dribbling, and other essential skills. By the next summer, around age 12-13, he had improved and started scoring. At 14, he became the best player in the state. While others relied on athleticism and natural talent, Kobe stood out for his strong work ethic, a trait that stayed with him throughout his entire career in the NBA.

Neuroplasicty

Neuroscience has discovered that when you learn one bit of information, you double the connections in your brain, anywhere from 1,300-to-2,600 connections.

If you don’t review what you learned, those connections fall apart in a matter of hours or days.

Your life is a reflection of how you think. In order to change your life, you have to stop thinking the same thoughts by becoming aware of your unconscious perceptions. Turn the negative ones into positive ones. Kobe, conditioned his brain by introducing these new thoughts, then by training his body to perform the way he was thinking. Kobe, trained his brain so well that his body followed.
